ACTIVITIES OF ASSOCIATION FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2023

On the 4th of October 2023, The Tanzania Horticulture and Potato Seed Platform was officially launched by the Director of Crop Development in the Ministry of Agriculture Mr. Enock Nyasebwa on behalf of the Honorable Minister of Agriculture Hussein Mohamed Bashe (MP), the event was held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Arusha Region. This project is Financed by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) & the Dutch Embassy in Tanzania. This contributes to implementation of Agriculture Development Strategy 2021-2031.
The platform brings together various stakeholders of horticulture and potato seeds from the public and private sector who have the same intention to coordinate their activities and collaborate to strengthen the seed systems locally in Tanzania & International.
Speaking at the event, TASTA CEO Mr. Bob Shuma who is also the Platform’s Chairman acknowledged several people and Institutions who contributed towards making this platform a milestone to the Agricultural Development efforts in the country (THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, TAHA, SAGCOT, TOSCI, THE WORLD VEGETABLE CENTRE & THE DUTCH EMBASSY IN TANZANIA).
Mr. Shuma also explained that Export of Vegetable Seeds bring in forex not less than 8.4 mil. EURO = Tsh.28,294,944,000 & Exports of OPV Ornamental flower Seeds contracts not less than 5000 households in semi-arid of areas of Arusha/Kilimanjaro/Babati /Tanga/Singida / Morogoro and brings in forex not less than 2.5mil. EURO = Tshs. 6,622,321,250/= per year.
This is beneficial to many households /employments to Youths and women/ food security/incomes to the Government/sustainable profitable investments by large/small and medium entrepreneurs.

17.10.2023 TASTA team with TAHA Jerry Peterson met to discussed the next steps of implementing Activities for the Horticulture and Potato Seed Platform. Also, the meeting addressed the opportunity of applying for a new Plant Variety Protection (PVP) project from the Netherland embassy

– Companies and TASTA saw the need to address the letter as it threatened and may cause disruption in the seed market seeing even those selling at low prices can now rise to the new recommended price and farmers acquiring seed with less technology and biological characteristics.
